Take a Taste of the Panhandle

More than a dozen restaurants, from fine-dining establishments to coffee bars, are participating in the third annual Taste of the Panhandle, on Jan. 21 at the historic McFarland House in Martinsburg, WV.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Martinsburg, the event will benefit Panhandle Home Health, which provides in-home care to Panhandle residents, and Young Life, a faith-based nonprofit that supports teenage parents in developing life skills.

The McFarland House was constructed in 1878 by Alexander B. Parks, an industrialist and  Martinsburg’s first treasurer. In the 1950s, it was purchased by the McFarland family, who developed it as a catering and restaurant business. In 2007, after renovation and decoration, it became the party site it is today.

Marketed primarily as a wedding destination, the house provides an elegant backdrop for any event. A main ballroom on the second floor is mirrored below in a smaller party space, flanked by a windowed garden room that offers access to a rear patio. The front of the house features smaller, more elegant spaces, furnished with couches and chairs and configured for conversation.  

Taste of the Panhandle begins at 6 p.m. Diners may sample foods as diverse as pizza, nouvelle cuisine and seafood, with Mexican cooking, vegetarian fare and fine chocolate also represented. Wine and beer pairings will be offered.

The event offers an opportunity to sample some of the best cuisine produced on the Panhandle. Fine dining establishments from Shepherdstown and Martinsburg are participating, as are culinary arts students from James Rumsey Culinary Arts and the Blue Ridge Community and Technical College.

The evening will also include silent and live auctions. Tickets are available through January 1 at $65, at which time the price increases to $75. Only 175 tickets are available for the event.
